MEET THE ACTS ATTENDING AMERICANAFEST 2015
The official artists chosen this year highlight the diversity of songwriting talent and the engaging and dynamic live shows coming out of Australia.
Emma Swift is a wandering songbird who splits her time between Sydney, Australia and Nashville, Tenn. A fan of minor chords, heart worn highways, scuffed-up boots, gin and endless pedal steel, she likes to play vulnerable music. Her heroes, in no particular order, are: Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, Bill Callahan, Anais Nin, Lucinda Williams and whoever invented dry shampoo.
Performing: Saturday, Sept. 19 – The Basement – 8 p.m. CST
Returning to AmericanFest for the second time is Henry Wagons. Best known as the front man of “Wagons,” Henry’s solo career owes as much to Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra as it does to Johnny Cash. The past few years have seen Wagons share stages around the world with Lucinda Williams, Justin Townes Earle, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Calexico, Bill Callahan, Will Oldham, Okkervil River and John Hiatt, along with SXSW, Canadian Music Week and Americana showcases.
Performing: Friday, Sept. 18 – The Basement East – 11 p.m. CST
Performing for the first time at AmericanaFest while simultaneously working on their fifth studio album with Mark Nevers, Halfway bring a raucous brand of Americana into the mix at 2015’s festival. Halfway formed in 2000 in Brisbane, Australia and they have released four critically acclaimed albums. Originally starting out on Sydney’s Laughing Outlaw Records, they are now on Brisbane label Plus One Records. In 2008, key writers John Busby and Chris Dale won the Grant McLennan Memorial Fellowship, arguably Australia’s most prestigious song writing award.
Performing: Friday, Sept. 18 – The Basement – 9 p.m. CST
Not even 23 years old, Oh Pep! have been awarded Young Folk Performer of the Year 2014 and nominated in the Best Folk Roots Category by The Age Music Victoria Award. They have released two EPs to date and gained rapid momentum, touring Australia, the USA and Europe. Oh Pep! embark on another great adventure this September with their first North American tour which will see them perform at the Americana and CMJ and an array of shows across Canada and the U.S, with dates in Europe to follow.
Performing: Saturday, Sept. 19 – The Basement East – 9 p.m. CST
Four piece alternative country rock’n’rollers, Raised By Eagles, released their debut LP in July 2013. Since that time, continually raw and captivating performances have cemented their reputation as one of Melbourne’s most sought after independent acts, receiving rave reviews across the country and a nomination for ‘Best Country Album’ at The Age Music Victoria Awards 2013. The band went on to deliver a blinding run of shows throughout 2014 that included appearing alongside international luminaries of the genre, Justin Townes Earle, Ryan Bingham and Lindi Ortega at the inaugural ‘Out On The Weekend’ Festival.
Performing: Friday, Sept. 18 – The Basement – 9p.m. CST
