(Nashville, Tenn. April 24, 2020) – Ana Cristina Cash brings some light to the world with the release of her full-length album, Shine. Cash has been teasing listeners for the past seven months with the release of new tracks “Broken Roses,” Renegade Rose” and “Fixed to Fall,” leading up to the release of the full album, which can now be found through all digital retailers HERE. Billboard premiered the album release earlier this week, calling the project “the first full statement of a new career path for the singer.” Read the feature HERE.
Ana wrote or co-wrote every song on the 14-track album, aside from her two renditions of “Dream” by Roy Orbison and “Seminole Wind” by John Anderson. A special co-write to note is “Brand New Pair of Shoes,” as it is a co-write between her and her father-in-law, Johnny Cash. Ana carries on the Cash name, putting music to the lyrics once written by Johnny himself, creating a jazz-inspired tune.
Musical influences flow throughout the entire album with strong jazz vibes using heavy horns, muted trumpets, and Ana’s poignant voice in songs like “Busted” and “Hey Hipster.” At the same time, her love for Country music beams in “Outlaw Blues,” and “Where the Muscadine Grows,” a heartfelt song about staying grounded and going back to your roots.
The previously released song “Fixed to Fall,” was co-written with Ana’s husband and producer, John Carter Cash, along with singer-songwriters and close friends, Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young who are also known for their roles in the hit TV show Nashville. Together, the talented songwriters wrote about the longing for a loved one to come home safely from their deployment, showing off their lyricism with lines like, “I’ll build up a fire to reach the sky and hope that you’ll return.” Although co-writes dominate throughout creating a well-rounded album, “Tug Of War” is a song credited entirely to the talented songstress herself. A sassy and confident song acting as a warning sign to anyone looking to get in between Cash and her man.
Within Shine, there are moments where the listener feels transported into a sultry jazz club with Ana Cristina Cash fronting the stage, drawing in the crowd with her timeless and soulful voice. Each song takes the listener on a journey, telling the story of lost love, female empowerment, relationship struggles, and chasing your dreams. The light and airy Roy Orbison tune, “Dream,” feels like a day in the clouds, encouraging the listener to follow their dreams, saying, “Dream when the day is through, dream and they might come true… Things never are as bad as they seem, so dream, dream, dream.”
Late last year, Ana worked to raise awareness and provoke conversation surrounding mental health issues with the release of a powerful and thought-provoking song, “Broken Roses.” The song and music video were released on World Mental Health Day and tells the difficult love story of a troubled relationship involving mental health, alcohol and drug abuse challenges. The entire album was recorded in Johnny Cash’s hand-built cabin known as the Cash Cabin, of Hendersonville, Tenn. Cash built the cabin in the 70s and since, countless country music greats have recorded within its walls including Emmylou Harris, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Loretta Lynn and of course Johnny and June themselves.
Ana Cristina Cash was raised in Miami, Florida. Cash, of Cuban descent, is bi-lingual and began a professional career in music at the tender age of six. She quickly became an accomplished champion of the singing competitions on the variety show, “Sabado Gigante.” Cash’s recordings showcase her broad vocal range, from a deep resonating contralto to an amazing soaring soprano, revealing what is known to some as a “whistle register.” Cash signed to Sony Music’s Latin division at the age of 15 and recorded her debut album, Ana Cristina, in the Spanish language. Cash went on to be the first Hispanic American to perform the “Star-Spangled Banner” for a presidential inauguration for President Bush in 2005. In 2016, Cash married music producer, John Carter Cash, and has since been writing and recording the music she was born to sing. Cash’s music perfectly blends her connection with rockabilly and gritty blues, adding in a flavor of country and soul to create her distinctive sound.
