CRS and COPD Foundation Team Up To Offer Free On-Site Screenings At CRS 2016

Attendees offered detection and education on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA

(Nashville, Tenn. – Jan. 18, 2016) Country Radio Seminar and the COPD Foundation have partnered to offer chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) screenings at CRS 2016. Screenings will take place throughout the 3-day event, held Feb. 8-10 at Omni Nashville.

COPD, an umbrella term used to describe progressive lung diseases, is characterized by increasing breathlessness. Nearly 24 million Americans have the disease, but approximately half of them remain undiagnosed. If diagnosed early, COPD is treatable and individuals can lead more productive lives. The opportunity to screen attendees at CRS will help spread the word about early detection and educate CRS attendees about the importance of lung health. The basic screening test takes less that 3 minutes and all attendees will be given private access to their test results to take to their personal physicians.

Screenings will be administered by respiratory therapists. Individuals over the age of 35 or anyone with a history of smoking or family with lung disease will be asked to take a brief, five-question screener to assess their risk. If the score indicates a high risk, they will be asked to complete further testing, which includes a simple breathing test to measure lung volume (i.e. spirometry).

The screening clinic will be open Monday, Feb. 8 and Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Level 2 of the Omni.

The screener and the lung volume results will be provided to participants right away. If there are any indications of concern, a recommendation will be given to the participant to share the results with their physician. Additionally, COPD will administer Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) testing. Alpha-1 testing is a genetic form of COPD and can result in serious lung disease and/or liver disease. Alpha 1 is diagnosed through a simple blood sample (finger stick test) administered by a qualified health care professional. Sample will be sent to a designated lab. Results will be sent to a physician champion who will inform the participant of the results.

Kevin Moran, Chief Development Office of COPD states, “The COPD Foundation is extremely thankful to Country Radio Broadcasters for inviting us to participate in this year’s seminar to promote lung health and build awareness about COPD. With over 24 million Americans living with COPD of which some 12 million undiagnosed this is a disease at epidemic proportions. CRS provides the COPD Foundation a amazing opportunity to educate participants about lung health and screen for lung disease. COPD is preventable and treatable. Thanks to the CRB team the foundation will be reaching a critical audience to help spread the word about the 3rd leading cause of death in this country and the importance of testing and early detection.”

CRS Executive Director, Bill Mayne adds, “This kind of service in which we are offering to our attendees provides our continued focus on the most important asset of our industry, our people. No matter how great your talent and professionalism, we want to do our part to insure you are ‘with us’ to make your contributions to all of the world through our industry and your gifts! So please, get tested. It’s quick, simple, and free to all attendees.”
